What does a typical day look like for you as a green building consultant?
A typical day for a green building consultant involves conducting energy and environmental simulations, analyzing building performance, and ensuring compliance with sustainability certifications like LEED and EDGE for example. The role includes collaborating with architects and engineers to optimize HVAC systems, lighting, and natural ventilation, providing technical support for life cycle assessments and carbon footprint calculations, and preparing detailed reports and recommendations to enhance building sustainability and efficiency and occupant comfort. Regular meetings with project teams and clients to discuss progress and solutions are also part of the daily routine.
Career Path and Development
Can you share your career journey and how you evolved within GBCE?
I have around 5 years of experience in sustainability consulting, and my career and knowledge have grown steadily stronger each year. Since joining GBCE, I've observed significant changes in my professional skills. One of the most notable improvements has been my ability to create effective client presentations. Additionally, I have greatly expanded my expertise in various simulation software, conducting numerous simulations that have enhanced my technical proficiency in this field.
What kind of skills and qualifications are essential for someone in your role?
A sustainability consultant typically needs a strong educational background in Environmental Science, Engineering, Architecture, or a related field, along with relevant certifications such as LEED or EDGE. Proficiency in simulation software for energy modeling, daylight analysis, LCA, and carbon footprint calculations is essential. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills are crucial for assessing building performance and sustainability metrics. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are necessary for creating detailed reports and effective presentations, as well as collaborating with clients and project teams. Effective project management skills are important for coordinating multiple projects, meeting deadlines, and working with various stakeholders. Familiarity with sustainability standards and regulations, along with a high attention to detail, ensures accuracy in data analysis and reporting.
Responsibilities and Projects
Can you describe some of the key projects you have worked on at GBCE?
A couple of key projects I have worked on include a LEED certification project for Pomme de Pain, a restaurant chain in France. Given the confined space of the restaurant, we had to engage in frequent client meetings to ensure they understood the necessary implementations for achieving the highest level of certification. This project required meticulous planning and clear communication to meet the stringent LEED standards while accommodating the client's specific needs and space constraints.

Another notable project I have worked on is an Ulaanbaatar Green Affordable Housing and Resilient Urban Renewal Project (AHURP) in Mongolia, where we provided comprehensive consulting services. This included EDGE certification, creating building guidelines, conducting life cycle analysis, and offering material usage solutions. As a government project, it presented unique challenges related to climate conditions and financial constraints. We leveraged our technical expertise to assist in developing a green and sustainable housing model that sets a benchmark for future projects in the country. Our goal was to create an exemplary project that showcases the potential for sustainable and affordable housing development nationwide.

What are the main responsibilities and tasks you handle in your current position?
Key responsibilities in my role include preparing detailed presentations for clients, focusing on various criteria related to sustainable building practices such as energy efficiency, water conservation, material selection, and air quality. I conduct weekly meetings with clients to explain these sustainable parameters and their integration into the design. Additionally, I perform various simulations related to energy usage, daylight optimization, and wind flow to inform and enhance building performance and sustainability.
Challenges and Rewards
What are some of the biggest challenges you face in your role?
The biggest challenge in my role as a sustainability consultant is balancing the diverse and often competing demands of sustainability standards, client expectations, and project constraints. This includes managing limited budgets, tight timelines, and the need to educate clients about the long-term benefits of sustainable practices. Additionally, keeping up with rapidly evolving technologies and regulations, while ensuring that each project meets the highest environmental and efficiency standards, adds to the complexity of the role. Overcoming these challenges requires a combination of technical expertise, effective communication, and strategic problem-solving.
What do you find most rewarding about your work at GBCE?
Working at GBCE over the past year has significantly improved my skill set. I have been fortunate to work on a variety of projects, each requiring a different technical skillset, conducting various simulations, which has enhanced my technical expertise. Additionally, I have developed my non-technical skills, such as creating effective presentations and conducting client meetings. This diverse experience has been invaluable for my professional growth, allowing me to refine both my technical and interpersonal abilities.
